What we do

Research, training and service — for the family.

From counselling children in Chennai to advocacy at the United Nations, our work strengthens the family as the foundation of human development.

01

Research

SERFAC conducts independent studies on family well-being, child development and social trends. It has served as principal investigator on national research projects with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), with support from the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR).

02

Professional Training

Courses and workshops for parents, teachers, counsellors and caregivers on the family life cycle, effective parenting, child development and family values.

03

Family-Centred Practice

SERFAC’s own approach, built on the stages of the family life cycle and Erik Erikson’s model of human development. It equips families with skills in:

Family economics

Budgeting, home management and livelihood skills

Family education

Parenting, health, nutrition, sanitation, gender equality and family values

Prevention

Awareness on domestic violence and substance abuse

04

Women’s Empowerment & Livelihoods

Skills training that helps women and families become economically independent, moving from consumers to contributors in their communities. The Earn While You Learn programme links this work to the UN Sustainable Development Goals on poverty, gender equality and education.

05

Child Protection & Care

Counselling and rehabilitation for children affected by abuse and violence, programmes in schools across Chennai and its suburbs, and a children’s library that nurtures learning and confidence.

06

Advocacy at the United Nations

SERFAC regularly submits statements to the UN Commission for Social Development and the Commission on the Status of Women, calling for greater recognition of the family’s role in development, including a proposed Charter of Family.
